Abstract
Forensic Genetics, a sub-area of forensic science, is a rapidly expanding field within criminalistics. Although the application of molecular biology techniques in investigations began in the 1980s, it was from the 2000s onwards that their use became popular in the world, when the development of more practical and robust DNA analysis techniques allowed the expansion of their use in the forensic area. In addition, the deepening of knowledge about DNA and its structure allowed scientists to glimpse the use of this knowledge in the elucidation of crimes and in the search for missing persons, including discovering new possibilities within forensic investigations. For this reason, recently new branches of research and tools have emerged within forensic genetics itself, with emphasis on DNA Databases. This work aims to present an overview of the current situation of forensic genetics in Brazil in terms of technological, legal and strategic aspects.
